Titus - “God Answered Our Specific Prayer”
Titus was born in August of 2023 with bilateral microphthalmia (congenitally small eyes) and bilateral cataracts. We were referred to an opthalmologist in another state who quickly scheduled Titus for surgery to restore his vision. We were told he could be anywhere from being mostly blind and needing to walk with a cane to visually impaired but able to see some with correction (glasses or contacts).
His right eye had a much larger cataract and was smaller than the left eye. The surgeon was hesitant to remove the cataract on the right eye. She said he was at very high risk for complications. We went ahead and decided to do surgery on both eyes but 1 at a time about 4 wks apart. The surgeon reluctantly agreed.
The next week my husband and I spent a lot of time praying over Titus and specifically praying that his right eye would be bigger than they initially thought.
Titus had his first cataract removed and was brought back to us in recovery. The surgeon came back and explained how it went and said that they examined his right eye more thoroughly while he was under anesthesia. She said "his right eye is much bigger than we thought and I have no problem performing surgery on that eye". We were shocked and excited God answered our specific prayer.
He had his second surgery 4 wks later and did well. At one of his follow up visits, he was fitted for contact lenses and has been wearing them since. We were told that they can tell he has vision but they just didn't know how much.
Over the next 9 months we followed up about every six weeks with his optometrist and opthalmologist. The doctors told us he would most likely be language delayed and gross motor delayed due to his vision. All along we prayed that he would see way more than they ever thought and that he would be able to do all the things other kids could do.
At 12 months, he just started crawling so his pediatrician thought it would be best to have him assessed for PT/OT/ST. While waiting for the assessment, he just exploded developmentally. He was taking steps, waving, signing, and even had a few words. After his assessment, they told us he doesn't need any services at the moment and was developmentally on track or ahead in some areas.
We had another follow up appointment with his opthalmologist about a month later and she said "he has way more vision than I ever thought he would!"
Titus is now 21 months and doing so well. He's walking/running and talking a ton. He recognizes shapes and colors! They are some challenges and he will need a few more corrective surgeries on his eyes (first one is this summer) but he has done so well. I share this to show how God was with us the whole time and we believe He has a very special plan for Titus.
